What can I do with an Electric Scooter in Phuket?

Many people visiting Phuket quickly notice there is a lot of traffic, the heat makes walking long distances no fun, the taxis often want to haggle. What better experience could there be than cruising down the street on a fun e-bike or scooter?

If you rent a scooter or bike, you can:

  • Get a breath of fresh air
  • See a much larger portion of the island around you
  • Explore the nooks and crannies
  • Explore Beach Road to the fullest
  • Get from your room to dining and shopping areas

Are E-Bikes and E-Scooters legal in Phuket?

There is an oft-repeated myth that originated in 2022 after an incident involving some tourists who were joy-riding near Patong beach. While police did go on record to say they were “banning” the e-scooters, they later clarified that the vehicles’ unlicensed status means they should only be used where other unlicensed vehicles can be used – same as bicycles – and should be kept out of the road.

We always recommend riding on small, private streets and sidewalks, and avoiding going out into the main roads.

Of course, any moving vehicle brings some risk, but we believe that the risk of using an e-scooter is similar to that of a bicycle as long as the rider has training, some experience, and wears protective gear.

Here’s an in depth guide on the safety of e-scooters in American cities.
